Why is it important to integrate mental and behavioral healthcare within primary care?

Integrated medical-behavioral health care brings care for mental health and substance use into medical settings, like pediatricians’ offices and other primary care and medical clinics. In the United States most children and teens visit a primary care doctor or nurse each year for medical check-ups or illness. If mental health care is available at these visits, research tells us that kids are more likely to get mental health care when it is needed. With the changes in health care, we are seeing more integrated medical-behavioral health care programs, and primary care clinics are increasingly offering mental health and substance use care. Hear more about how this is done and what it means for children, families, and professionals.
