Our Mission

Effective Child Therapy is an initiative of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (SCCAP). The site was originally developed in partnership between SCCAP and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). The site aims to provide parents and other caregivers with easy-to-access, comprehensive information on the symptoms and treatments of behavioral and mental health problems in children and adolescents.

This site was developed to educate the public and professionals about mental health treatments that are backed by the strongest scientific support, and are most likely to work.  Information presented is not meant to replace the advice of a health professional.  It can serve as a starting point for discussions with a qualified clinical child psychologist or other health professional to find an evidence-based therapy.

Information on the EffectiveChildTherapy.org website is intended for educational purposes only.  The website is not meant to replace the advice of a mental health professional nor serve as a substitute for mental health treatment.  Do not use this information to self-diagnose or self-treat.

Information provided on the EffectChildTherapy.org website comes from articles published in both the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and Evidence-based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.  Evidence-based updates that include information about the latest research are periodically published in these journals. As evidence-based updates are commissioned for upcoming publications, updates to this website will be posted based on those updated reviews.

About the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology

The Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (SCCAP) is a psychologist-run, non-profit association representing mental health providers with expertise and passion for the use of evidence-based treatments, prevention programs, and techniques for assessing and understanding the behavioral and mental health of children and adolescents. The society’s primary mission is to improve the lives of children, adolescents, young adults, and their families by providing the best possible clinical care.

As a division of the American Psychological Association, SCCAP’s members include nearly 3,000 clinical child and adolescent psychologists, trainees, and other mental health professionals. The content of EffectiveChildTherapy.org is maintained by volunteer members of SCCAP, and funding for this website comes from SCCAP’s membership dues as well as the proceeds from the royalties of its two professional journals, Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and Evidence-based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

SCCAP does not allow advertisements on EffectiveChildTherapy.org.  Links are provided to other organizations that are dedicated to the shared mission of improving the mental health and well-being of children, adolescents, and families.  By clicking on the provided links to outside organizations you are leaving the EffectiveChildTherapy.org website.
